How Common is Dental Implant Failure?

Dental Implant Model

The last thing we want to worry about is dental implant failure. With the high costs that dental implants can have, having to pay more to fix the issues caused by having dental implants can leave you bitter. Here at our office in the Bronx, New York, we have reliable data on how common dental implant failure is. We also know how to reliably avoid such failures.

Causes of Dental Implant Failure

The stats do not lie, one out of every twenty people who have a dental implant has a chance of that implant failing. But there are key reasons as to why they may fail that are easily avoidable.

One key reason why an implant may fail is the lack of sufficient bone support. Just like how your jawbone supports the rest of your teeth, implants rely on a strong and healthy bone to be set into. Weak bones are caused by several complications such as chronic gum disease or not treating an infection early.

Another common issue is untreated gum disease. If left untreated, gum disease can negatively impact the upper and lower jawbones causing deterioration. Also, they can make the site of the implant difficult to prepare and set as infection and inflammation may cause the implant to shift which opens the possibility of the implant falling out or further infection.

Bruxism, also known as teeth grinding and or clenching, is another reason why dental implants fail. It takes time for an implant to garner its full strength after the procedure. If you have chronic bruxism, extra after-procedure care is necessary to avoid implant failure.

Smoking also has shown signs of causing dental implant failure. Because cigarettes contain materials harmful to the bone structures of your teeth and gums, they can cause tooth decay and gum inflammation. This increases the likelihood of post-procedure complications such as the implant shifting or becoming dislodged.

Have Your Implants Done by the Experts!

One final major reason why dental implants fail is lack of training. Many general dentists will attempt dental implants with a lack of proper knowledge of the greater jaw, sinus, and gum systems throughout the mouth. Oral surgeons are expertly trained in these areas with additional schooling on top of regular dental schooling.

That is why Dr. Marlon K. Moore is our go-to expert dental implant specialist. Dr. Moore has worked in the Bronx for over two decades and has received awards for his excellence such as the New York Dental Association top oral surgeon award in 2019. He has successfully implanted thousands of dental implants and readily knows and understands these common warning signs of failure.
