What are wisdom teeth?

They are the third set of molars in the back of your mouth.

Why do wisdom teeth need to be pulled?
There are two reasons. There is not enough room in our mouths for them, and when left alone, wisdom teeth also cause problems for your entire mouth, possibly including infection, cysts, benign tumors, alignment issues and damage to nearby teeth. The best time to remove wisdom teeth is between the ages of 17-25, as the teeth are just developing and have not yet intertwined themselves with facial nerves.

What happens during surgery?
The procedure usually lasts an hour, depending on the number of teeth that need removal and the difficulty of the surgery. We offer different types of sedation, as patients and their needs vary. As soon as the sedation has taken effect, our surgeon will carefully and gently make incisions to remove each tooth. Once the teeth are removed, each site is cleaned of any tooth or bone debris. Gum tissue is then stitched back together, and gauze is placed over the extraction sites to manage to bleed and help blood clots form. You also may need someone to drive you home afterward, depending on what sedation method is chosen for your surgery.

Will I get stitches?
It depends. Some patients need stitches, and some don’t. If we do place stitches, they dissolve on their own within a couple of weeks.

What sedation options do you offer?
We offer local anesthesia, IV sedation, and general anesthesia. With local anesthesia, you will be awake during the procedure, and we will numb the area around the particular teeth. IV sedation helps to relax you, and even though you will be aware of your surroundings, you’ll feel no pain. General anesthesia is offered intravenously like IV sedation, but this form puts the patient into a medically induced coma. We discuss sedation options and comfort levels as we intentionally tailor every treatment plan to each individual patient.

What should I do to recover after my surgery?
For post-surgery, we provide home care instructions to help you recover. Over-the-counter medications, such as ibuprofen, usually suffice to manage pain, but depending on your health and medical history, we may prescribe other pain medication for your recovery.

What is a dry socket?
A dry socket is when the blood clot in the extraction site is dislodged, exposing the nerves and bone. A dry socket is painful! Please make sure to avoid eating hot, chewy and spicy foods as well as using a straw and tobacco products.

How much does it cost to have wisdom teeth removed?

To give you a transparent cost estimate, we must first complete your wisdom teeth evaluation. The evaluation lets us determine the position of the teeth, level of impaction and the number of teeth that need removal, all of which greatly affect the difficulty (and cost) of surgery.
